We will be moving to Brisbane in January and trying to decide where to live. We will probably rent for a month or two but would like to get an idea of where we should be thinking of settling long term. We don’t have any kids and will be working in the City Centre near Parliament House. We like outdoor living (beach etc) but also theatre, movies, restaurants etc. Somewhere safe where one can walk freely at night.
We think we are looking for something either:
a) Right on a beach and then commuting in – what would be the nicest and closest and with all the necessary shopping etc. And how long would it take? Any other pros and cons?
b) Alternatively something cosmopolitan (NOT EDGY!) with all the advantages of being close to work and city life?
Any suggestions? Thanks.
John

Re: Moving to Brisbane
Sat, July 26, 2008 - 2:06 PMBrisbane is on a river , there's a bay but no surf beaches, the nearest is Caloundra or Surfer's about an hour's drive on a good day. AS you'll be working in the city, try west end, or New Farm . Public transport's pretty good, or bicycle, motor scooter. Parking for cars can be a hassle. There's a good ferry service. Rents are not cheap. If you want tp live near the city and also near the water, Sandgate or Wynnum /Manly may interest you..

check out www.ourbrisbane.com and www.realestate.com.au to give you an idea of suburbs etc
I'd vote for West End or South Brisbane/Southbank - both are on the outskirts of the cbd and you could walk to work within 15 mins depending where you're based. Bulimba and Hawthorne are nice too, very popular and more trendy than villagey atmosphere. Southbank has movies/markets/restaurants and a man-made beach so is pretty popular with tourists and locals.....you'd feel like you were in the thick of things there!
Manly/Wynnum/Lota is pretty being on the bay but it would take you over 40 mins to commute to town by car...qld rail has a website that would list the train times to give you an estimate. Same with Redcliffe.
If you wanted to live on the coast both Gold Coast and Sunshine Coasts are at least an hour (100kms) from Brisbane so you'd be looking at a long journey every day.
Cheers

Re: Moving to Brisbane
Sun, July 27, 2008 - 6:15 AMThanks so much for the advice. I was hoping to remain within about 30 minutes from the city. I don’t know how bad the traffic is or how good the public transport system is so I guess that would need to feature in my decision. I am usually torn between enjoying the amenities of the city (movies, restaurants etc) and the laid back atmosphere at the beach. I am not a surfer but like to walk and read on the beach.
Looking for the impossible?

Re: Moving to Brisbane
Sun, July 27, 2008 - 3:34 PMPublic transport great ! There's a great ferry service on the river, and busues and trains are pretty regular, traffic can be congested at peak hours. You could always drive to the beaches on weekends, that's what most people do. Over the border in N.S.W there are some wonderfully long deserted beaches for walking.

Re: Moving to Brisbane
Mon, August 11, 2008 - 6:50 PMi live up at woody point, on the peninsula, its a 40 minute bus ride though into the city. i like it because its quiet, commuting can suck sometimes but its a quiet beautiful place to live and relatively cheaper than the city. Its near Redcliffe. Not much nightlife but relaxed beachside feel. Lots of nannas around too. Good luck on your move to brisneyland, i am loving being back in this town. meegs -

Re: Moving to Brisbane
Thu, August 14, 2008 - 11:35 PMGotta watch the wind on the bridge crossing, it can get pretty gusty at times. makes for hard going. Shorncliffe to Boondall is a good ride, Brizzy's pretty Bike friendly in most areas. I rode from Sunnybank to New Farm Park a couple of times. I live in East Briz now, and often ride over the story Bridge to the valley or along the river to the city. via south bank or over the friendship bridge.
Looking to do a long ride to Byron Bay at some point, via Kingscliff and Pottsville, . . . . . along the ocean.
