Working & Living In Brisbane

Hi all,

Me and my wife is thinking of going over to Brisbane to work and live there after spending nearly 4 years in Liverpool, UK. We probably thinking of going some in mid August this year and are looking for tips from websites about Brisbane to find out more about the city.

It would be really great if anyone can help us with the following questions we have ;-

Where is the best area for us to rent a property, preferably nothing too expensive but nice, safe and not too far from the city and preferably near to the sea and some nice parks or nature spots. Preferably a house or townhouse as we're quite tired of living in an apartment. Would be helpful if you could also include the rental that we might be paying in the areas recommended.

This might be inappropriate but it would really be helpful if someone could tell us something about the city, eg. how safe is it, which suburbs to avoid, etc.... Not to put down the country that we are now living in, but living here have taught us to be more wary as to the area that we intend to stay. We have many unpleasant experiences here, which are part of the reason we are thinking of moving to Australia. So any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Last but not least, whats the job prospect in the city? My wife wouldn't have any problem as she is an experienced nurse. Is there many jobs in the IT & Internet sectors as I am looking for jobs as a web developer.

Thanks for your time and hopefully someone would be able to help us in making our move to Brisbane a pleasant one.

Thanks for posting that website. My wife and I live in NY but we are coming to your area in July to visit our son, who took a job teaching in the Sunshine Coast area. He is in love with your country. Now I can research some places to visit. We are very involved with Native American spirituality and I was hoping I could learn of a site that explains the teachings and customs of your countrys' native people. We hope to travel north and meet some indiginous residents, and we want to know the customs and respectful manners required.

I'm not sure if it will have the exact stuff you want, but www.datsip.qld.gov.au has a link to a collection of PDFs on "Cross Cultural Communication" Written for a public service type audience I suspect though.
You might also like to try www.dreamtime.net.au/
If you know the name of a community you might want to visit, they may have a web page like www.aurukun.qld.gov.au/
The community Information section has some info.
One major thing to be aware of is that most of the Aboriginal Communities have some sort of alcohol management plan. You might not be able to bring any alcohol in, even if you plan to drink it after you leave.

i've lived in brisbane most of my life. you're right about your partner, she'll have no problems getting work. my house mate is actually a nurse over here from scotland. as for renting, it'll depend on what you consider expensive. there has been a recent and ongoing hike in rental prices in brisbane, but it's still considerably cheaper than other southern cities.

while there are no true beaches in brisbane, the gold and sunshine coasts are only a hour or so drive away. both are connected by motorways.

australia is currently at record lows for unemployment, with queensland one of the leading states, so i wouldn't imagine you'd have any problems with your own employment. we certainly have an i.t. drain in this state. wages being higher, both o.s. and interstate.

come and enjoy, it's a beautiful city, with a great climate, and a relaxed culture.
