Suburbs like New Farm, West End, Spring Hill, and Paddington are home to the 'alternative' cultures in Brisbane. There is also a place called Ahimsa House in West End where a lot of alternative types gather so you could maybe find what you're after there. There is a drumming circle that meets at Roma Street on the first Thursdays of the week, as well as several vegetarian/vegan restaurants nearby.

I don't know if you're interested in the naturist and nudist cultures, but there are a few groups of this kind too which I am involved with. I'm also interested in organising an alternative festival sometime at the end of November called "Brisbane ConFest" for people into stuff like veg-n cooking, massage, poi, yoga, meditation etc. The group can be found at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/brisbane-confest

Also this site is available to advertise alternate gatherings in Brisbane: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/brisbanegatherings

Hope this helps you. :)

Plenty of bike tracks, New farm area is 50/50 alternative, it's pretty central, west end also central also 50/50, many diverse eating places, rents are not cheap. anywhere in Briz.. You'll find your way around, but those are the places to start.
                                                                                                                                                                 Welcome & Good luck.

hey all

i'm moving to Brisbane soon and i was wondering if you knew anything about 'alternative' culture in Brisbane (hate the word 'scene' lol although i'm sure thats what some people would call it :)
By 'alternative' I mean, for example, community theaters, community/social centers, raves, less commercial music venues, free bike workshops, locally owned vegetarian/vegan places to eat...... and anything set up by and for the community basically :)

maybe you know neighborhoods that support this kind of stuff?

um, maybe a little description of the opposite of what i'm looking for would be helpful too hehe
stuff i dont particularly like: sports bars, 'chain' restaurants and cafes, big expensive clubs, shopping malls..... lol

thanks!!
